The Great Barometer of the ecological transition

As students from the French higher education system, we gathered around the following fact: not only are we insufficiently prepared to face the ecological transition, but we also lack the basic skills and knowledge to trigger off this transition. We can at least testify that our universities sometimes fail to perceive how severe the transition will have to be.

For this reason we wanted to provide a comprehensive view of the current situation in our universities regarding how they adapt to the ecological transition. So why not engage directly with our institutions and ask them to be more transparent about their actions and commitments? This is the aim of the Great Barometer. This global study was realized with a view to raise concerns in our universities’ administrations and to assess what has been done so far. Moreover, we hope this will foster self-assessment.

Numerous universities used this questionnaire as an opportunity to raise challenging questions. In spite of the lockdown, and supported by their students, they went through all the questions and could assess whether their activities - training and research, campus life, governance and professional opportunities offered to their students - were in keeping with the ecological transition. We gathered their answers here:

Report "Universities lagging behind in ecology"

In their responses to the Great Barometer survey, only 15% of higher education institutions stated that they were ready to train all their students in socio-environmental issues. When it comes to examining their training, it is as much a question of our schools and universities ignoring the ecological transition.

Alerted by this figure, the collective Ecological Awakening chose to analyze the commitments of 39 French universities, business schools and engineering schools. In the report Universities lagging behind in ecology , it reviews all of their practices, taking stock of the integration of ecological transition issues in higher education.

Companies’ answers to our questionnaire

The Great Barometer survey questions higher education institutions on 6 major themes divided into several questions: strategy and governance, training, professional opportunities, research activities, community life and sustainable campus.

You will find below the answers provided to these questions by each of the universities and schools that participated in the Grand Baromètre.
